EUNICE~It is with heavy hearts that the family of Bernadine Leonards announces her passing on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Acadian Medical Center in Eunice with her loving family by her side. She was 88. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 03, 2016 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Entombment will follow in the St. Augustine Mausoleum with Msgr. Robert Romero Celebrant.

Bernadine was a homemaker and farm wife bringing meals to the field and helped driving rice trucks and tractors. She graduated from college after her kids were grown and retired from the Southwest State School in Iota. She loved working in her community, she was a member of the Ladies Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, God and Prayer coffee group, and Prayers and Patches group, Religion teacher and very active in the Church of Annunciation in Duralde. Bernadine and Blaise hosted foreign exchange students and were one of the many founders of the Lousiana Swine Festival and Roberts Cove German Festival. She was an commissioner for voting polls and loved to do icon paintings, but most of all she was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend and will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her especially her husband of sixty seven years, Blaise Philip Leonards of Duralde; her four sons, Ludwig Leonards and wife, Theresa of Pitkin, Ignatius Leonards and wife, Janet of Friendswood, TX, Daniel Leonards and wife, Rita of Duralde and Paul Leonards and wife, Connie of Simmesport; five daughters, Blandina Leonards Zaunbrecher and husband, Michael of Simmesport, Gwen Leonards Zaunbrecher and husband Dale of Eunice, Caroline Leonards Trahan of Lafayette, Joan Leonards Douget of Duralde and Marie Elaine Leonards Brazzel and husband, Frank of Ville Platte; daughter-in-law, Cassie Leonards of Humble, TX; one sister, Bertha Habetz Owen of Satillo , Mexico; the joys of her life her fifty grandchildren and eighty eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her son, Sylvester Leonards, her parents, Wilhelm and Franziska Theunissen Habetz; one grandson, Blake Zaunbrecher; great grandson, Job Zaunbrecher; son-in-law, Eddie Fontenot; brothers, Martin, Pirmim, Msgr. Daniel Habetz, Bill, Joseph, Anton and sisters, Hilda and Clara Habetz, Sister Marie Habetz and Cecilia Zaunbrecher.

At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Eunice on Monday, May 2nd from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm and again on Tuesday, May 3rd from 7:00 am until time of services. Deacon Jim Cormier will recite a Rosary at 6:00 pm Monday evening.
