Obituary

BASILE ~ It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Dorceueaux Sonnier announces his passing on Tuesday, July 27, 2026, at his home with family by his side at the age of 86. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 pm on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile. Entombment will follow in the St. Augustine Mausoleum with Father Keenan Brown, Celebrant.

John was born on October 3, 1939, to the late John and Euphemia Hebert Sonnier in Basile, Louisiana. John was a retired Sergeant First Class veteran of the United States Army and the United States National Guard where he received multiple medals. He was a man of high esteem and integrity who enjoyed working with his hands as he was always building something. He was also an avid reader and carpenter, often repairing homes for his uncle in Basile. John also loved intimate talks with his daughters and their husbands and spending time with his family. He spent time on the Basile Town Council and was a member of the American Legion Post 261 in Basile.

John is survived by his daughters, Bridgette Sonnier Daigle and husband, Troy of Prairie Ronde and Tracey Sonnier Pitre and husband, Jason of Basile; his brothers, Jimmy Sonnier and wife, Kathleen of New Roads, Julius Sonnier and wife, Glenda of Sulphur, Jerry Sonnier and wife, Elaine of Basile, and Joe Sonnier and wife, Bonnie of Parks; his sisters, Mary Kistler and husband, Phil of Carlyss and Marguerite Boduch of Plano, TX; grandchildren, Kelsie Dever and husband, James, Macie Pitre Fontenot and husband, Dusty, Hayden Pitre and friend, Baylee Hayes, Logan Daigle Alexander, and Jay Roberts Pitre. He loved spoiling his great grandchildren with all his heart, Riley Dever, Madeline Pitre, Ainslie Fontenot, Eliahna Alexander, Amelia Dever, Callen Fontenot, Lane Paul Fontenot, Izabella Alexander, Memphis Dever, Blace Dever Tate, Ellison Vidrine, and Annie Menard; a host of nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and friends

He is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Marvel Sonnier Carver and Marlene Sonnier Chaumont.

Visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Basile on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 8:30 am until time of services. A rosary will be prayed at 2:00 pm.
