EUNICE~Melvie Joseph Blanchard passed away on June 29, 2023 at the age of 95 in his home in Eunice, Louisiana. He was born on November 23, 1927 in Church Point, Louisiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 03, 2023 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Entombment will follow in the St. Paul Mausoleum with Father Nick Ware, Celebrant.
Melvie is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Shirley Blanchard, their only son, David Blanchard, and his beloved granddaughter, Sydney Blanchard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Blanchard and Melda Thibodeaux Blanchard, as well as his siblings, Clifford Blanchard, Ludie Blanchard White, Clinton Blanchard and Shelton Blanchard.
A Korean War veteran, he served in both the Army and the Army Air Corps before joining the Merchant Marines. A man of few words, he possessed a sharp wit that he passed on to his son and granddaughter. His gentle nature made him a favorite among animals and children. A former cook offshore, he maintained a healthy appetite and famous sweet tooth to the end. His family’s most cherished memories happened around the dinner table.
Melvie passed peacefully in his sleep. In the face of his battle with Alzheimer's, his wife and son tirelessly ensured his comfort and maintained his beautiful quality of life during his last years at home.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Eunice on Sunday, July 2nd from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm and again on Monday, July 3rd from 9:00 am until time of services. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm on Sunday.
