Obituary

EUNICE — With heavy hearts, the family of Stephen Charles Zaunbrecher announces his passing on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at his home, at the age of 83, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on February 3, 1943, in Eunice to Frank and Hilda Frey Zaunbrecher, Stephen lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, and devotion to his family. A dedicated rice, crawfish, and cattle farmer, he embraced farm life with pride. One of his greatest joy was riding his side‑by‑side to check on his land and cattle, and working cattle remained his all‑time favorite pastime. Though known for his abrupt presence, those closest to him recognized the gentle, kind strength and quick wit that defined him.

He enjoyed cooking, watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, and spending time with family and friends.

A Visitation will take place at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Eunice on Sunday, September 20, 2026 from 4PM - 8PM with a rosary prayed at 6PM. Visitation will continue on Monday, September 21, 2026 from 8AM until time of services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, with Father Nick Ware, Father Miller, and Father Boulet officiating.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Patricia McFarlin of Jennings, and his children, Jackie Voitier of Crowley, Craig Zaunbrecher and wife Shonda of Pine Island, Bradley Zaunbrecher of Crowley, Gretchen John and husband Joseph of Estherwood, Shane Zaunbrecher and wife Mandy of Elton, Wayne Zaunbrecher and wife Erica of Elton.

He is also survived by his siblings, Loretta Kurta of Mowata, Linda Frey of Roanoke, Michael Zaunbrecher and wife Blandina of Simmesport, Dale Zaunbrecher and wife Gwen of Eunice, Reggie Zaunbrecher and wife Joan of Eunice, John Lawrence Zaunbrecher and wife Leslie of Mowata, Lambertina LaHaye and husband Mark of Baton Rouge.

He leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 24 great‑grandchildren.

Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, Hilda and Frank Zaunbrecher; his brother, Patrick Zaunbrecher and JW Zaunbrecher; his great‑grandsons, Jacob Craig Zaunbrecher and Rustin Roy Cassedy; and his son in law, Stephen Conrad Voitier.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Lawrence Catholic Church of Hathaway or to the catholic church of your choice for masses.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Victoria Panelli, Laura Popeck, NP, and the staff at Ochsner Cancer Center for their compassionate care. Special thanks also to Dr. Matthew Rainey for the care he gave throughout the years and Hope Healthcare and Hospice, and the dedicated staff at Our Lady of Lourdes for their kindness and support during Stephen’s final days.

Stephen’s legacy is one of faith, family, and quiet strength. His presence will be deeply missed, and his love will continue to live on in the hearts of those he cherished.
