Tony Johnson, the man, the myth, the legend, beloved son, brother, father, and friend, left us for the big football stadium in the sky on January 6, 2025. Born in Basile, Louisiana, to the late Kermick Johnson and Margey Fontenot Johnson, Tony was full of life and laughter, always ready to crack a joke or charm a room with his playful nature and flirtatious smile.
Tony proudly served as a police officer for many years, retiring from the Basile Police Department. His dedication to his community was evident in every interaction, and he brought his sense of humor to the job, making everyone feel a little lighter, even in tough times.
Tony’s humor was legendary—whether he was making everyone laugh at family gatherings or flirting his way through a room. He was especially known for his love of football, proudly hanging his Saints memorabilia upside down in his living room until they won another Super Bowl. Above all else, his unwavering love for God and his deep faith were the true anchors of his life. His children and family came second only to God, and he lived every day with devotion and love for them.
Tony loved family gatherings, especially Thanksgiving, when he could be surrounded by the ones he cherished most. There was nothing he enjoyed more than a slice (or three) of his mother’s famous Heavenly Hash cake—he swore it was straight from heaven itself!
A big fan of horse racing, Tony loved the excitement of the races. He was thrilled to see American Pharoah win the Triple Crown and never stopped talking about the greatness of Secretariat. He could often be found watching the races, getting as much joy from the sport as he did from his family and friends.
Even in his final moments, Tony remained true to himself, flirting with the nurses and humorously searching for a wife. His charm and humor never left him, reminding everyone that he could make any situation a little lighter and a lot more fun.
Tony's heart broke in 2003 when his only son, Casey Jo Johnson, was tragically taken in a car accident, and not a day passed without Tony missing him deeply. We find comfort knowing they’re together again, undoubtedly sharing a laugh and watching over the rest of us.
Tony is survived by his two loving daughters, Brittany Johnson Murphy of Elton, married to Robert, and Jadelyn Ebarb of Jennings, along with his "forever" son-in-law, Kendall O’Blanc of Egan. He was the proud grandfather to Raylee Jo O’Blanc, Carson Ryan O’Blanc, and Cole Maddox O’Blanc. His love for his grandchildren was as strong as his love for God, football, horse racing, and a good meal.
Tony's life was filled with the love of his siblings and best friends: his brother Otis Johnson and wife Kayla, his sister Rachel Johnson Fontenot and husband Randy, and his brother Justin LeBleu and wife Jennifer, all from Basile. His godchildren, Josh Johnson of Eunice, Lisa Martin of Baton Rouge, and Jevin Fontenot of Basile, held a special place in his heart, and his 14 nieces and nephews will carry on his legacy of laughter.
Tony joins his beloved son Casey Jo, his parents, Kermick and Margey Fontenot Johnson; his stepmother, Pam Johnson; his maternal grandparents, Vorice and Edwina Fontenot; his paternal grandparents, Louis and Wilda Lejeune, and Ano Johnson in heaven. He’s undoubtedly hosting the best family reunion imaginable.
At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Basile on Wednesday, January 8th from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm, and again on Thursday, January 9th from 8:00 am until time of services. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm on Wednesday by his Class of 1982.
A celebration of Tony’s life will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Basile with Father Keenan Brown where we’ll honor his memory with laughter, stories, and probably a little flirting, just as he would have wanted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family, and please hang your Saints memorabilia upside down, tell a good joke in Tony’s name, cook up a good meal, watch a horse race, and remember to always find joy in life—just like he did every single day.
