BASILE ~ It is with heavy hearts that the family of Dr. Bobbie Deshotel announces his passing on Friday, May 22, 2020 in the comfort of his home with loving family by his side. He was 83. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2020 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile. Entombment will follow in the St. Augustine Mausoleum with Father Keenan Brown, celebrant.

A 1954 graduate of Vidrine High School and 1960 graduate of the LSU Medical School, Deshotel began his practice in 1962 and was just short of 50 years when he retired in 2011.

At the time of his death, he was still serving as the Basile school district representative on the Evangeline Parish School Board, a position he held for 51 years.
Deshotel also served as mayor of Basile for six years during the 1960s..  He was a member of the board of directors of Basile State Bank and a parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church with a special devotion to the Virgin Mary.


Over the years, he served as assistant coroner for Evangeline Parish,  founding member and president of the La. Swine Festival Association,  member of the Basile Athletic Association, team doctor for the Bearcats, Little League coach, scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of Troop 76, and a member of the Tyeaux De Basile Hunting Club.


Because of Dr. Bobby’s encouragement of further education, the family will accept donations in lieu of flowers, to be given to a BHS graduate to aid in funding his/her post graduate studies.


He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend and will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him especially his loving wife of sixty one years, Joella F. Deshotel of Basile; his five loving children, Randall M. Deshotel of Vidrine, Robert L. Deshotel and wife, Lisa of Basile, Cherie D. Frey and husband, Shane of Mowata, Derek J. Deshotel and wife, Pegi of Basile and Robin M. Deshotel and wife, Jill of Elton; his pride and joy his fourteen grandchildren, Sarah D. Johnson, Camille D. Manuel, Allison D. Fontenot, Travis Deshotel, Trevor Deshotel, Taylor D. George, Cole Frey, Stefan Frey, Hannah Deshotel, Trevor Kratzer, Taylor Duplichan, Mason Deshotel, Vivian Deshotel and Isabella Deshotel; fifteen great great-grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.


He is preceded in death by his parents, Adraste and Edmae Guillory Deshotel.


At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Basile on Sunday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and again on Monday, May 25 from 7 a.m. until time of services. A Rosary will be  recited at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
