BASILE - It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Johney L. Jeans announces his passing on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Acadian Medical Center in Eunice at the age of 78. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 03, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Basile with Brother Mike Fontenot officiating. Burial will follow in the Protestant Cemetery.

Johney is a 1961 graduate of Basile High School, a 1966 graduate of Louisiana College, as well as a graduate of McNeese, earning his master’s degree in 1975.  Football was an important part of Johney’s life.  His senior year in college, he was selected “Most Valuable Player.”  After graduating from college, he signed with the Houston Oilers for a brief time. In 1972, he came back to Basile High School as head coach and later became principal, a position from which he retired in 1997. In 2006, Johney was honored to be one of four alumni selected for Distinguished Alumni at Louisiana College’s 100th Homecoming Celebration.  He was a deacon at the First Baptist Church and was very involved in prison ministry, Gideons International, church renewals, and disaster relief ministries.  He also served on the Board of Directors at Acadian Baptist Center and was actively involved in the Second Harvest Food Distribution.  During his lifetime, Johney served God in and out of the United States.   Johney was a very outgoing person and always happy to lend a helping hand.  He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also loved woodworking, gardening, and cooking but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He will truly be missed by all who know and loved him. He leaves behind a wife of fifty-four years, Judy Scott Jeans of Basile; his four daughters, Pamela Jeans Goodwin and husband, Moby; Charlotte Jeans Fontenot and husband, Mark; Wanda Jeans LeBert and husband, Brett, all of Lake Charles, and Bonny Jeans and husband, Earl Jones of Katy TX; his six joys of his life, his grandchildren, Hannah G. Hebert and husband, Josh, Gunnar Goodwin, Hailey Goodwin, Caitlyn Fontenot, Wyatt LeBert and Natalie LeBert; as well as extended family and countless friends.

Johney is preceded in death by his grandson, Christian Fontenot; his parents, Walter and Ella O’Rear Jeans; sister, Helen Powdrill; and his brothers, E. B., Louis and Boe Jeans.
