BASILE~ It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mervin Fontenot announces his passing on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at his home with loved ones by his side at the age of 85. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, August 20, 2021, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Basile. Entombment will follow in the St. Augustine Mausoleum with Father Keenan Brown, Celebrant.

Mervin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He also loved visiting with friends, cooking, and making sausage. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Mervin will be sorrowfully missed by all who knew him,  especially his wife of 60 years, Sue Fontenot of Basile; sons, Michael Fontenot and wife, Karen, and Cornell Fontenot and wife, Cindy, all of Basile; sister, Shirley Ledoux and husband, Davis of Basile; six grandchildren, Carey Fontenot, Lauren Lemoine, Jill Jenkins, Andrea Daggett, Paden Marcantel, and Jesslyn Austin; eleven great grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Maxile and Zula Manuel Fontenot; brother, Maurice Fontenot; and sister, Helen Sittig.

At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Basile on Thursday, August 19th from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm, and again on Friday, August 20th from 8:00 am until time of Services. The Catholic Daughters will pray a Rosary 6:30 pm Thursday.

Pallbearers carrying Mervin to his final resting place are Kevin Ledoux, Kerne Ledoux, Kyle Ledoux, Johnny Deshotel, Ronnie Douget, and Mike LaBuff. Honorary pallbearers include Matthew Fontenot, John Pelican, and Julius Ardoin.
